Earlier this year, Road & Track senior editor Jason Cammisa had an interesting idea involving the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC®: While the vehicle's 45 MPG EPA estimate was impressive, it still fell a bit short of a certain competitor's vehicle that has led the industry in overall hybrid sales for over a decade. Despite that fact, Cammisa's real-world experience said that diesel engines outperform their EPA numbers, while hybrid drivetrains tend to fall a little bit short of their estimates. Knowing all that, he wondered, what if this Mercedes-Benz luxury sedan was actually the most fuel-efficient vehicle in America?

The hypothesis was an interesting one, but as it turns out, he ended up being right, as the E250 BlueTEC® did best its biggest MPG competitor in a real-world road test plotted out by Road & Track. That means there's absolutely no reason consumers shouldn't get plenty of luxury and fun driving dynamics to go along with their fuel economy. In other words, the most fuel-efficient vehicle in the country right now is way more fun to drive than the standard runner-up, and that's great news not only for your Mercedes-Benz dealer in Lakeland, but also for the people that shop there.

While consumers certainly are welcome to spend their auto budget however they please, we would much rather see our customers in vehicles that are efficient as well as dynamic and luxurious. Car-buying shouldn't make people choose between those things; and thanks to the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E250 BlueTEC®, they don't have to. This is exactly what people are talking about when they mention having their cake and eating it, too.
