When consumers walk into our facility with their lists of wants and desires in a luxury vehicle, we see all sorts of fun things that have to do with engine power, technology, sunroofs, stereo systems and so much more, but what is often very underrated, in our opinion, is a focus on safety.

Granted, a growing number of customers are interested in things like airbags and advanced safety tech, especially compared to, say, 30 years ago, but we get a lot more questions about a car's horsepower and features list than we do its IIHS safety rating.

In the case of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, that's a question worth asking, because the answer is very, very good.

Recently, the IIHS awarded the E-Class vehicles a Top Safety Pick+ designation, which means it not only scored top marks in the overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint crash tests, but also the famously tough small front-overlap test, which has stymied so many automakers over the course of the last few years.

With a strong score on even that test, the E-Class now joins the ML-Class vehicles as Top Safety Pick+ cars, and we're very proud of the fact that it has received such elite status. Thanks to some fortifications and speedy airbag response, this is now a car that any Mercedes-Benz dealer can say is among the safety large luxury sedans in the industry. That's something we like having on our resume, and we can certainly assume that it's something our customers are going to appreciate having available to them, even if it wasn't on their initial wish list for a new luxury vehicle.
