Over the course of the last few weeks, fans of Mercedes-Benz have grown increasingly excited over the prospect of a long-awaited Mercedes-Benz pickup truck, and while the future of such a vehicle here in the United States is still a bit of a mystery, the dedicated sales team at Fields Motorcars find ourselves thrilled over the prospect, as well, especially since it’s really starting to sound like such an automobile will, in fact, get made.

The latest rumors about the Mercedes-Benz pickup suggest that it could be christened the X-Class, with models adhering to that particular naming convention as more variants are born. The truck reportedly will feature four doors, a four-cylinder or six-cylinder diesel engine, and a surprisingly reasonable starting price that is, admittedly, yet to be determined officially.

The appeal of such a model is no mystery; while there are plenty of respectable pickup trucks from which to choose in today’s automotive world, the truly lavish and luxurious options are few and far between. To get a workhorse as refined as this one would be a lucky thing for consumers the world round, as Mercedes-Benz likely already knows.

Unfortunately, its chances of coming to the U.S. are small for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is that it only will be sold with those diesel drivetrains. Also, there apparently is concern at the top reaches of Daimler that American perception of the Mercedes-Benz brand is one of luxury and grace, not heavy-duty machinery.

Whether or not this vehicle ends up at your friendly neighborhood Mercedes-Benz dealer remains a mystery for now, but its mere existence gives us hope that it could happen someday. It looks to be a truly intriguing truck, and we can’t wait to see a production-ready version in the coming several months.
