The higher-ups at Mercedes-Benz already have gone on record to say that they hope to see 15-25 percent of its sales be electric vehicles within a decade, which helps explain why the automaker plans to develop a sub-brand of autos that will focus expressly on those new electric drivetrains. Late last month, fans were given their first look at the first of these autos at the Paris Auto Show, and here at Fields Motorcars we already can say with a good measure of confidence that we like the direction these vehicles appear to be taking.

The new sub-brand will be called “EQ” as a nod to emotional intelligence (EQ is an acronym for “emotional quotient,” the partner to the more cognitive “intelligence quotient, or “IQ”), but the “E” in that name, as it has for other automakers, also has an attachment to the word “electric,” naturally. The earliest of these vehicles will in fact wear the Mercedes-Benz badge and will be developed by the marque’s AMG® performance sub-brand, and as we learned in Paris, the flagship will be a beautiful crossover called the Mercedes-Benz Generation EQ.

Going with an SUV makes a ton of sense as a first go since that is the quickest-growing segment of autos in the U.S. right now, but we’d expect this one to be elite in terms of both luxury and its electric range. These vehicles strive to be the most desirable in their segments (as do all new Mercedes cars), but our customers from Auburndale, FL and the rest of the world are going to have to wait until 2019 to see how it stacks up because that’s when it’s due for wide release. One thing we know already is that it looks like it’ll be worth the wait!
