Mercedes-Benz has for some time now proven its desire to be at the fore of the race toward putting together a production-quality autonomous automobile, but when customers think about what these autonomous vehicles constitute, they typically consider only the drive itself and not what happens when the vehicle is idle.

For electric vehicles in particular, the autonomy continues when the car is parked in your garage, as Mercedes-Benz just announced a partnership with Qualcomm to develop a wireless charging station for the forthcoming 2017 Mercedes-Benz S550e plug-in hybrid. This means that when a driver comes home and parks their vehicle atop the wireless charging pad, they’ll be able to head right inside with no consideration to plugging anything in. The vehicle will charge/refuel itself, which is taking “autonomy” to an entirely new level.

As it stands, owners of EVs are perfectly content to plug-in their automobiles if it means avoiding trips to the gas station, but this new bit of technology would make it so that drivers could avoid the hassle of gas stations and the hassle of remembering to plug in a car every night. Everything just takes care of itself, and obviously the more convenient a product is, the more enthusiastic customers are going to be about purchasing it.

As your local Florida Mercedes dealer, we look forward to telling our customers that the models sold here in this building will have the ability to charge without any wires. This relationship with Qualcomm could warrant some really interesting things, all of which should combine to create a fascinating and convenient future for the drivers of Mercedes-Benz cars.
