We know it's disconcerting when a warning light pops up onto the dashboard of new or pre-owned Mercedes-Benz automobile. With a few exceptions, these lights mean something has gone wrong with your vehicle and probably is going to require some sort of repair to get it corrected.

Despite the headache, the best way to stay safe and avoid even bigger long-term problems is to know what these warning lights mean and to heed them as close to immediately as possible.

For those that need a quick refresher about what these warning lights mean, here’s a reminder for some of the icons that are less familiar:

ABS Light: This means your anti-lock brakes are either deactivated or not functioning properly.

Brake Pad Wear: This icon, which literally looks like brake pads around a circular rotor, indicate that it’s time to get those replaced. Waiting too long could damage the rotor, which is considerably more expensive than just replacing the brake pads.

Bulb Failure: The light bulb with an exclamation point inside of it means that you have a light burnt out somewhere on your vehicle. Replacing it could avoid a roadside stop by a police officer.

ATTENTION ASSIST®: The little steaming cup of coffee icon monitors driver behavior and pops up when the vehicle senses driver fatigue.

Glow Plug: Diesel models also feature this warning light, which means the glow plugs are too cold to start the car. The icon will disappear once the car has heated up a bit.

There are of course several other warning icons, but most of them are ones most people recognize.
