How to Extend the Life of Your Car Battery

We’d like to say that it never gets cold enough in Auburndale, FL to worry about the weather depleting an old battery, but the meteorological insanity of the last couple of weeks have proven that this isn’t necessarily the case. While extreme cold does suck the life out of an older battery, there are other ways that a battery could lose its life a little more quickly than normal.

Here at Fields Motorcars, your local car dealership in Lakeland, FL, we offer up the following tips for extending a battery’s life:

·    --Turn off your lights when you leave the car. While many of today’s automobiles have lights that will turn off automatically, it still happens that people can wake up to a dead battery after having left their lights on all night. It’s better to get into the habit of turning them off.

·      -Avoid using electronics while idling. Running the air conditioner or infotainment system when the engine isn’t running puts extra stress on a battery. It’s better to use those things when the vehicle is actually running so the alternator can keep recharging the battery.

·      -Clean off corrosion. Your terminals can grow corrosive gunk over time, so dip a toothbrush in a cup with water and baking soda and scrub that stuff clear occasionally to help extend the life of your battery.

·      -Test your battery. While we will test the batteries on Mercedes-Benz models at our service department during maintenance visits, car battery testers are reasonably affordable and can help let you know when it’s time to buy a new one.

As always, if you need any help with your automobile’s battery, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our Mercedes-Benz service center can test and replace batteries at any time!
