Modern safety technologies are helping to make cars, trucks, and SUVs safer than they've ever been, but they're also helping us inch towards something quite a bit more interesting: autonomous automobiles.
For those that don't feel like busting out their thesaurus, autonomous automobiles have the ability to drive themselves with little to no help from the person sitting behind the wheel, and a recent report indicates that Mercedes-Benz is as close as anybody at making this unbelievably futuristic reality happen.
The automaker has been testing a 2014 Mercedes-Benz S500 in Germany, making only a few minor tweaks to a car that already features a lot of what it needs to drive on its own. Earlier this month, that car completed a 62-mile run from Mannheim to Pforzheim, Germany without human assistance, which proves we're a lot closer to this autonomous driving thing than we probably realize.
This vehicle will come naturally with safety technologies like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and preemptive accident collision systems, but the test version of the car also tacked on a couple of long-range radar systems and four short-range radar systems, as well as a camera to detect traffic lights and another one to scan the car's surroundings.
Together, this technology made it possible to undergo the 100-kilometer journey that helped prove an autonomous car really is possible. When it comes to shopping for a new Mercedes-Benz in FL, much of this tech is already available, but you still have to drive with your hands on the wheel. That may change sometime in the not-too-distant future, however, and probably sooner than you ever thought possible.
