Anybody who has been paying attention knows that Mercedes-Benz has been working tirelessly the last couple of years to update its line of SUVs, offering a stunning combination of new models and renamed, redesigned ones. However, one Mercedes-Benz concept vehicle that debuted this month at the Beijing Auto Show really caught our eye. This concept SUV is paving the way for the future of green driving, featuring a paint job that can store and use solar energy.
The concept vehicle in question is called the Vision G-Code, and if it were actually ever produced, it would be the smallest crossover in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. That, of course, isn’t what makes the concept so notable, however; what makes it exceptional is its multi-voltaic silver exterior paint, which literally acts as a solar panel enveloping the automobile. The process by which it works is a complicated one, but essentially all that sun juice would go toward powering the electric motor in the hybrid drivetrain. It could in theory run exclusively on electric power generated from our nearest and dearest star.
There are plenty of other technological advancements available in this new Mercedes-Benz vehicle, including a holographic grille that changes color based on what driving mode the user selects, but as your Mercedes-Benz dealer we’re most interested in the idea that a car could run using a “solar panel” that is essentially hidden. Concepts don’t always make their way to production, but perhaps this technology someday will, either as a part of this nifty new crossover, or on another Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
