Today's cars features safety technologies that most of us couldn't have dreamt up 20 or 30 years ago. Movies and books about the future featured automobiles that could fly in the air and run on compost rather than gasoline, but none of them had adaptive cruise control or rearview cameras or lane departure warning systems.

We suppose that doesn’t make for quite as interesting science fiction as a flux capacitor, but the reality is that today's luxury vehicles are safer and more technologically advanced than ever before--though some makes and models are a little further ahead than others, as Forbes recently pointed out in their list of the 13 Safest Cars for 2014.

As your local Mercedes-Benz dealer, we're pleased to say that two of our models were featured on this list: the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan and 2014 Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV.

To be featured, a vehicle not only had to feature a good number of the aforementioned newfangled safety technologies, but also must have scored well in NHTSA and IIHS crash tests. Both of these vehicles obviously did well in both areas.

The E-Class features a new driver-drowsiness monitor, front and rear-collision mitigation systems, adaptive cruise control, and lane assist. The M-Class, meanwhile, offers a lot of the same features, plus an optional Driver Assistance package, which can actively apply the brakes in conjunction with these safety features.

They are both undeniably luxurious vehicles, but it's their safety features and scores that win the day this time around. The future of safety is now, and while cars can't fly just yet, they’re probably safer on the ground with these technologies anyway.
