One of the things that takes people a while to understand in the world of luxury vehicles is how, exactly, the nomenclature works. Unlike mass market brands, who give every model a name, luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz tend to use letters and numbers to name their models instead, keeping the focus on the brand rather than the individual vehicle.

Well, Mercedes-Benz is hoping to clear up any confusion for the 2015 model year by renaming a few new Mercedes-Benz vehicles in order to better organize them. Here’s how things will change next year:

For starters, all crossovers and SUVs will have a "G" name. The GLA-Class, our small crossover line, will go unchanged, but the current M-Class will soon be called the GLE-Class. A few other models keep their "G" heading, but get a few tweaks, like the GLK-Class shifting to GLC-Class and the GL-Class going to GLS-Class.

Most of the other models, like the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA and the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SL, will keep their names, however some of the drivetrain designations will be removed from official names in favor of an initial which will serve the same purpose while taking up less space. Here's a look at the new drivetrain abbreviations:

•    c – Natural Gas Drive, our compressed natural gas-run engine.
•    d – BlueTEC® or CDI, our diesel engine designations.
•    e – Electric, which replaces "Plug-In Hybrid," "BlueTEC® Plug-In Hybrid" and "Electric Drive."
•    f – Fuel cell, replacing the current "F-Cell."
•    h – Hybrids, which include the diesel hybrids.

The cars aren't changing, just some of the names. Hopefully these new conventions clear up a little confusion for buyers new to the wonderful world of Mercedes-Benz vehicles!
