It used to be that when a consumer went to purchase a new luxury vehicle, he or she did so with an eye turned to the size of the engine. Most American consumers have been raised to believe that bigger is better, particularly when it comes to power and the entertainment one could glean from driving a big-engine automobile.

Put as simply as possible, things have changed considerably along those lines over the course of the last few years. Today, automotive engineers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that smaller engines push out competitive performance numbers, and that fact combined with the superior fuel efficiency of smaller drivetrains has really brought customers to not only accept but enjoy the smaller engines.

Two Mercedes-Benz models offer a perfect example of this in action, which is very likely why they were included in a recent Yahoo! Autos list entitled, "Nine Models That Prove Small Engines Can Beat Big Engines." Specifically, these models are the 2015 Mercedes-AMG® C63 and the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG® Sport.

It used to be that every AMG® model in the lineup offered fans of Mercedes-Benz in Lakeland a massive 6.2-liter V8 engine to maximize power, but the engine of choice has downsized, with a series of more efficient options running the show now. The bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine in the all-new C63, due out later this year, will make up to 503 hp, while the C450 AMG® will use a 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 to make upwards of 362 hp.

These are great numbers for allegedly "downsized" engines. It just goes to show that sometimes, bigger isn't better.
