There are so many automotive accolades out there today that it’s hard to keep track of what certain awards actually are honoring. J.D. Power & Associates, for example, does some great things in terms of gathering consumer and industry data and putting together impressive lists of winners for all sorts of different things, but it isn’t always clear what they’re honoring based on the names of the studies.
Motor Trend is leaving no doubt as to what they’re honoring in giving the Best Driver’s Car award to the 2016 Mercedes-AMG® GT S. To determine the winner of this award, Motor Trend takes the top nominees onto a track and drives the living daylights out of them. Whichever model gives drivers the most engaging and rewarding driving experience, at least in the eyes of those judging the automobiles, is handed the accolade. This year it was the GT S, and honestly, as fans of Mercedes-Benz in Florida we shouldn’t be all that surprised to see it named the winner.
"The Mercedes-AMG® GT S has the sharpest, most precise steering we have ever felt on any Mercedes or AMG® vehicle," said Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh. "It makes massive power from a compact, high-tech turbocharged V-8 engine. What most impressed my team is how well the GT S was able to combine these elements. It put all 503 of its horsepower to the ground like an all-wheel-drive supercar and gripped the road through high-speed corners like a winged racer."
Those numbers speak for themselves, but even they don’t speak as loudly as the experience of actually driving this automobile. It is a truly stunning bit of machinery that deserves every bit of that Best Driver’s Car award. The only surprise, really, is how Motor Trend could have even considered any other vehicle!
