There was a time when Mercedes-Benz drivers weren’t particularly interested in owning a hybrid or plug-in electric vehicle because there was a fear that technology designed to be green first and foremost would somehow be forced to sacrifice other performance numbers in areas that fans of the brand would not want compromised.

While that may have been true for some models early on in the process, a whole lot has changed in green tech over the years, to the point that now it seems as though Mercedes-Benz vehicles get both more powerful and more efficient with every passing model year.

Currently, however, Mercedes-Benz reportedly is developing an electric drivetrain that could feature an electric range of up to 311 miles on a single charge, which would pretty comfortably place it as the king of EVs as far as range was concerned.

The engineering and production of a new Mercedes-Benz EV with a range like that would be a massive game changer, but Thomas Weber, chief of development for Mercedes-Benz, believes that lofty 311-mile range is perfectly attainable, and that the technology could be applied to a number of different vehicles in the stable to increase green driving without having to sacrifice performance.

Fans of Mercedes-Benz in Lakeland should be happy to hear that the automaker is making a hefty investment in green technology right now, not only in terms of producing electric vehicles but also fuel cell vehicles. If they keep this up, they could find themselves leading the charge into the future of green luxury driving. The friendly sales team at Fields Motors doesn’t yet have an idea of what this model will look like or how the new tech will manifest itself, but 311 miles is a lot, and is certainly a cause for excitement.
